- In 1937, an exhibition of the 88 sacred sites of Shikoku (a traveling exhibition of the principal image of each temple) was to be held along the Nankai Line, and the area around the current Kongo Housing Complex (west of the station) was chosen as the venue for the Koya Line. This station was opened in April of the same year to make it easier for visitors. In the spring of 2002, work began on making the station barrier-free. Three elevators, three escalators, wheelchair-accessible toilets and other facilities were newly installed on the premises, and construction was completed in March 2004. Sayama Shrine is located on the west side of the station, and the surrounding forest has been selected as one of Osaka Prefecture's "100 Best Green Spaces."
