The family's trade name is "Kuroyamaya," and it was named after their ancestors who emigrated from Kuroyama (present-day Mihara Ward, Sakai City) during the Kan'ei era. The family ran a cotton shop for generations until the mid-Meiji period. Later, they helped found Tondabayashi Bank and became an agent for Nippon Life Insurance Co., Ltd. After that, they sold stationery and tea. After closing, they commissioned Professor Emeritus Hayashino of Kyoto Prefecture University to restore the property to its current state in 1997. The main house is thought to have been built in the early 18th century, making it the second oldest remaining townhouse in Jinaimachi after the former Sugiyama family home.
