Detailed information
The Sugiyama family is said to have played a major role in establishing and managing the Jinaimachi area, while running a sake brewery and other businesses. The former residence of the Sugiyama family, one of the oldest merchant houses in the area, was designated as an Important Cultural Property in 1983.
In the past, the vast grounds of the Sugiyama family residence housed more than a dozen buildings, including the main residence, a sake storehouse, and an earthen storehouse, all built close together. The interior of the residence was lavishly decorated. The large living room, said to be modeled on a Noh stage, features a painting of an old pine tree by a Kano school painter. Behind this room is a tea ceremony room.
