Detailed information
Takidani Fudo Myooji Temple was founded in 821 by the Buddhist priest Kobo Daishi to pray for the safety of the nation and the happiness of the people. The temple's three sacred statues, the main image "Fudo Myo-o" (Cetaka) and its two attendants "Kongara Doji" and "Seitaka Doji", were carved by Kobo Daishi, who is said to have prayed three times after every stroke of his blade, and are all designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
Widely known as "Takidani no Fudo-san", daily gomakito (fire ritual invocation) is held in the main hall. The temple also attracts many worshippers, especially on the fourth Sunday of each month, when it holds a monthly festival with stalls.
One of the three most popular Fudo temples in Japan, Takidani Fudoson is said to offer blessings for curing eye diseases. Worshippers release dojo (loach) into the river in the precincts, as an old legend says the fish will take away something bad, such as eye disease. This temple is also respected by those praying for business prosperity, good luck, and protection from evil.
At Takidani Fudoson, you will always be greeted by the beauty of nature in every season.
